NZ Breakers Kahupapa Indigenous Basketball Singlet
The NZ Breakers Kahupapa Indigenous Basketball Singlet is a special NBL27 jersey celebrating the identity, culture and collective strength of Aotearoa. Designed around the Maori concept of kahupapa, meaning a fleet or formation of waka working towards a shared outcome, the singlet represents unity, movement and the power of individuals working together.
Made by Champion from premium 220GSM fabric, the jersey combines meaningful Indigenous artwork with authentic basketball detailing, including fabric appliqué branding, ribbed arm and neck bands and a Champion woven jock tag.
Designed for NZ Breakers supporters, the Kahupapa Indigenous Singlet connects the team's identity on the basketball court with the cultural stories of Aotearoa.
Kahupapa – Strength Through Collective Movement
Kahupapa describes a fleet or formation of waka moving together towards a collective goal. For the BNZ Breakers, this represents the coordination, trust and shared purpose required for a basketball team to succeed.
The central artwork features two manaia facing one another, connecting to form a single forward-facing head.
Each manaia represents different backgrounds, experiences and perspectives. Rather than removing these differences, the design brings them into alignment, showing how individuals can work together as one.
This reflects the Breakers' approach to basketball, where individual skill becomes more powerful through teamwork, communication and collective movement.
Manaia – Elevating the Individual
At the centre of the jersey's meaning is the concept of mana-a-ia, or elevating the person.
The design recognises the individual within the collective, with the wearer becoming part of the story.
The central figure draws inspiration from Tangaroa, the ocean domain, with an inverted form that suggests diving beneath the surface.
This represents depth, unseen knowledge and the discipline required to overcome mental and physical challenges.
For the NZ Breakers, the imagery connects with the team's name and playing identity. Like waves that gather energy before breaking, players must work together to build pressure, shift momentum and overcome obstacles.
Manu, Tuara and the Journey Forward
The jersey incorporates manu (birds) along its seams and tuara, or ridgeline.
These elements reference the birds traditionally followed by waka voyagers to help locate land, representing navigation, awareness and the ability to interpret changing conditions.
Within the context of basketball, they reflect timing, movement, structure and the importance of understanding what is happening around you.
The ridgeline forms a visual spine through the design, reinforcing the themes of direction, cohesion and collective purpose.
Ihi Moana – The Energy of the Ocean
The ocean is central to the Kahupapa design.
Breaking waves represent the point where energy gathers and releases, connecting to ihi moana, the inherent energy of Tangaroa.
This imagery reflects the adaptive and resilient character of Aotearoa, while drawing a direct connection to the NZ Breakers' name.
On the basketball court, it represents the ability to read the game, respond to changing conditions and work collectively to break through challenges.

Artist: Tikirau Hathaway
Tikirau (Ngāi Tūhoe, Ngāpuhi) is one of Haumi’s emerging designers, a young creative whose work reflects both a structural clarity and the fluidity of the world around him.
A graduate of the Bachelor of Creative Enterprise (2019) at Te Whare Wānanga o Wairaka Unitech and a product of Kura Kaupapa Māori (te reo Māori-immersed education), Tikirau brings a distinctly Aotearoa perspective to his creative process. His upbringing and education instilled in him not only language and cultural grounding, but also a way of thinking that recognises relationships – between people, ideas, and the taiao (natural world).
Tikirau has an instinctive ability to find alignment and logic within complexity. He approaches design with a mathematically attuned mind, often exploring the tension between the ordered geometries of human systems and the more fluid, living patterns of the taiao. This interplay gives his work both discipline and movement.
Beyond design, Tikirau is creatively diverse. He has performed as a lead actor in a New Zealand feature film and maintains a deep connection to music, creative practices that continue to influence the rhythm, composition, and expression within his design work.
At the heart of Tikirau’s practice is a commitment to the revitalisation of toi Māori (Māori creative practice) in Aotearoa. Through contemporary design he contributes to a growing generation of creatives who are carrying cultural knowledge forward – giving new form to inherited ideas while ensuring they remain relevant, visible, and alive.
