Gunn & Moore Diamond 404 Junior Cricket Bat

The Gunn & Moore Diamond 404 Junior Cricket Bat is a Grade 3 English willow cricket bat designed for developing junior players who want the balanced, all-round Diamond profile at an accessible price point. Available in sizes 3, 4, 5, 6 and Harrow, it provides a broad junior size range for young cricketers progressing through school and club cricket.

The Diamond is built around a balanced mid-swell position, placing the main hitting area through the middle of the blade rather than pushing it particularly high or low. For developing juniors, this creates a versatile profile that works across front-foot drives, straight-bat shots and back-foot scoring as their technique develops.

The F4.5 Face Profile and Powerarc Bow complement the mid-swell shape, giving the Diamond its distinctive all-round character. Rather than being heavily focused towards one style of batting, the profile suits young players learning to score around the ground and adapt to different lengths of bowling.

Thanks to GM's DXM Technology, the core Diamond shape can be accurately reproduced across different willow grades. This allows junior players to access the same fundamental profile found further up the Diamond range while choosing a willow grade appropriate to their level and budget.

What should you consider before buying?

With a junior cricket bat, correct sizing and manageable weight are particularly important. Buying a bat that is too large or heavy for a young player can reduce bat speed, make shot control more difficult and interfere with the development of good batting technique.

The correct size will depend on the player's height, strength and ability to comfortably control the individual bat. We recommend buying for the player now rather than choosing an oversized bat simply for them to grow into.

Why choose a Grade 3 English willow junior cricket bat?

Grade 3 English Willow is a practical choice for junior players who want to move into an English willow bat without the additional cost of higher willow grades.

Compared with Grade 1 and Grade 2 willow, Grade 3 will generally show more cosmetic variation in grain structure, colour and markings. These visual differences do not automatically determine how well an individual bat will perform.

For growing juniors who may progress through several bat sizes, Grade 3 can provide a sensible balance between English willow performance, regular match use and value.

Why buy a junior Gunn & Moore cricket bat from Players Sports?

Choosing the right junior cricket bat is about more than selecting the highest willow grade. At Players Sports Greenlane, junior cricketers and parents can compare bats across our extensive multi-brand cricket range and assess the size, weight, pick-up and profile that best suit the individual player.

Our knowledgeable team can help identify an appropriate bat for the player's current size and level of cricket, while our specialist Cricket Bat Workshop can assist with bat preparation, protection and ongoing repairs.

Frequently asked questions

Who is the GM Diamond 404 Junior best suited to?

The Diamond 404 Junior is best suited to developing junior cricketers who want an English willow bat for regular school or club cricket. Its balanced mid-swell profile makes it particularly useful for young players developing a complete range of front and back-foot shots.

Does the Diamond 404 have the same Diamond shape as the higher-grade models?

Yes. GM's DXM Technology allows the core Diamond shape to be accurately reproduced across different willow grades. This means the 404 retains the fundamental Diamond profile while using a more accessible Grade 3 English Willow cleft.

What is the difference between the Diamond 404 and Diamond 808 Junior?

The main difference is willow grade. The Diamond 404 Junior uses Grade 3 English Willow, while the Diamond 808 Junior uses Grade 2 English Willow. The 808 is the higher-grade option, while the 404 provides a more accessible choice for developing junior players.

Is Grade 3 English willow good for junior cricket?

Yes. Grade 3 English willow is a strong option for developing junior cricketers, particularly players who want genuine English willow but are still growing through junior bat sizes. It provides a practical balance between performance and price.

Should I buy a larger junior cricket bat for my child to grow into?

We recommend choosing a bat the player can comfortably control now. A bat that is too long or heavy can reduce bat speed and make it harder to develop good batting technique. Correct size, weight and pick-up should take priority over allowing excessive room for future growth.

This Gunn & Moore bat comes fitted with a facing, GM NOW! and ToeTek™ so you can hit the nets straight away skipping the knock in process if you like.

GM NOW!

  • “Knocked-in” by the Gunn & Moore bat makers in Nottingham. Raw linseed oil has been applied to reduce cracking and splitting by maintaining the moisture level of the blade, with a clear bat facing also applied to the face and edges to increase blade durability.

TOETEK ™

  • DriGuard applied to resist dampness and minimise toe swelling. A specially shaped resilient toe shield has also been fitted to toe of bat. This helps reduces toe damage and feathering that is often caused by tapping at the crease. We recommend avoiding tapping your bat at the crease, or only doing so softly.
